Evelyne Grace ~ {A New Little Life}

This was such an amazing shoot for me for so many reasons. Stacey-Marie and Tim are good friends and I have followed their journey from pre-pregnancy days through to the utter joy of new parenthood with great anticipation, and now I’m getting all emotional again…..

Before photography I was a midwife and for a few years a community midwife and it was always a joy to see couples I knew become first time parents. When you know a couple personally and have also experienced new parenthood yourself, that first early visit takes on new meaning. Seeing a couple taking care of their new baby’s every want – perhaps the greatest love affair of their life,  is a wonderful thing. Going from a couple to a family in an instant and that spontaneous and natural transition, getting to know their baby’s personality, learning what each different cry means, marveling at their little fingers and toes, giggling at the little sounds ( gurgling, sighing, squeaking, popping!), it really is a magical time.

There has been a massive move of late to capture newborns with novelty hats and sometimes propped up in their sleep, but I have to be honest, as a mother myself these images have a huge cute factor but they do little for me emotionally. With Stacey-Marie and Tim I wanted to spend a couple of hours just capturing life as it is. Yes there are some gorgeous images of little Evelyne Grace asleep and I love these, but what we have here are images that capture the emotions of being a new parent. It’s the look of the couple’s faces as they stare in wonder and what they have made together. It’s that interaction of a newborn with a strong ‘rooting’ reflex that will accept anything, even a nose! Finally, it’s the big one – the nappy change!:)Those early days take place within a cocoon. Yes it’s hugely tiring at times, but it’s beautiful.

Stacey-Marie & Tim, I am so privileged to have been invited in to your home to photograph your little family. Thank you.

Evelyne Grace was just 7 days old when I visited with my camera. The early days are a great time to capture a baby’s ‘newness’ and your own happy ‘cocoon’!
