A London Church Wedding & Beautiful Reception At 10-11 Carlton House Terrace
The Ceremony At St Paul’s Church Clapham
A few weeks ago I headed to Clapham to document the first part of Sophie and Oliver’s wedding day, beginning at Sophie’s parent’s house, before making the short walk to their local family church of St Pauls. After a beautiful ceremony, and sandwiches, cake and Champagne in the churchyard, the wedding party made their way via routemaster and black cab to Carlton House Terrace.
The Journey To Carlton House Terrace.
There was just one little snag however, the London Pride march was also taking place that Saturday and although finished by the time we began the journey, rather unhelpfully the roads remained closed. This meant the entire wedding party having to walk the final 15 minutes to the venue. Did this spoil things? Not at all. Sophie and Oliver took it in great spirits and in fact received many congratulations as they headed in the sunshine through the crowds. It also offered some additional street photography opportunities which have provided some fun additions to their collection.
About The Venue
Carlton House Terrace was originally built on crown land as a backdrop to St James’s Park. Designed by John Nash, it is said to have been inspired by buildings in the Place de la Concorde, Paris. It’s grand and beautiful, and built in a classical style. There are stately entrance halls, sweeping staircases, high ceilinged event rooms with original features (including painted ceilings), and stunning views across St James’s park. These days no 10-11 Carlton Terrace is occupied by the British Academy (for the humanities and social sciences), and also provides a truly stunning location for weddings.
The venue also has exclusive access to private gardens to the front of the building, a little oasis in the heart of St James’s. If you love the film Notting Hill, as I do, you’ll remember Hugh and Julia’s characters ‘breaking in’ to a similar private garden, and it felt very special to be able to take Sophie and Oliver there for some relaxed portraits.
Lovely Words
Sophie says; “You were fantastic at putting us at ease even though neither of us usually love having our picture taken and although we might have been a bit nervous about the couple shots before, it was actually lovely to have a few quiet minutes to ourselves and we are so happy with the results.”
What A Beautiful Day
This was a lovely wedding to photograph, with a few surprises thrown in a long the way. Sophie and Oliver were an absolute delight, as were their family and friends. I wish them so much happiness and thank them for allowing me to share their beautiful day with you. Jx
